hi!
after just three updates to this site i can see how it'd get a little bit hard to manage just how much "stuff" you generate for a website. i can also see how rearranging things (especially when using arbitrary file paths) can break a lot of things very quickly.
i am looking forward to learning about how to wrangle all of this either through suffering or discussing with others (also suffering), but for now my current priority is to actually track and keep a history of the website itself.
for that, my directory looks like this
i'll work in the directory (ie 250119, or YYMMDD) until that update is complete, send it out, then create a new directory. the date is set to whenever i publish or intend to publish. if i ever publish twice in a day i'll add an 01, 02, etc to the end, maybe separated by a dash or underscore.
eventually i'm going to link this to a backup server and maybe even use something like syncthing to sync the directories with another device if i decide that's something i feel like doing.
will this have problems? maybe. but i also think it does a fine enough job making a paper trail for my future self if i'd like to change it.
i have a lot of friends (some probably reading this) that are deeply interested in archiving old media. it's natural that viral infection would jump off on to me at some point. if nothing else i figure working copies of this website backed up through time would make the inner nostalgic in myself happy 10 years down the line or whatever.
